Monday February 5, 2007 – The Power of a “Meaningful” Touch!

Welcome to Fitness Minute! With Mary Salama , the newsletter designed to raise your awareness and empower you for change!

What can someone give you that can affect you more than words or money? Researchers agree that the touch of another human being can have powerful consequences on our health, mood and even how long you and I live!

The most powerful touch is described as a “meaningful” touch where the one touching desires to bless the one touched and benefit them, not themselves. A “meaningful” touch can take the form of a gentle touch, stroke, kiss or hug given by significant people in our lives.

Coincidentally, studies have shown that both the toucher and the one touched receive physiological benefits, confirming the ancient Biblical wisdom that says, “it is more blessed to give than to receive”! Consider this incredible cycle of positive effects, on both parties, that results from a meaningful touch between two people:

· Increased hemoglobin (red blood cells) levels in the bloodstream, which triggers

· Increased amounts of oxygen received by the body's tissues.

· The increase in oxygen energizes the person and can even aid in the regenerative (healing) process, if that person is ill.

· Lowers blood pressure

· Increases lifespan

· Positively affects the two peoples' ability to build a constructive, healthy relationship.

· Meaningful touch can protect children from seeking immoral or destructive relationships

Research confirms that it takes 8 to 10 meaningful touches a day to maintain emotional and physical health. With all these benefits, it is no wonder that we innately long for someone else's gentle touch. Even more importantly, just think about the fact that people who do not receive [regular] meaningful touches can become physically sick and emotionally depressed.

It is so simple to reap the benefits of this “free” healing technique. This valentine's day, keep your eyes open and your hands ready to give a meaningful touch to someone who might desperately need encouragement or healing. Here are some ideas to get you started:

· With coworkers and friends –a pat on the back, giving encouragement or praise

· At home – give your partner a backrub, a hug and kisses when they come home from work

· With your children – touch their hand as you speak with them or give hugs and kisses

· With strangers – if you don't feel comfortable touching them, you can make gentle eye contact and bless them with a sincere smile J or a word of encouragement. Your contact may be the closest they get to a “meaningful” touch that day!

Remember, every time you provide a meaningful touch you are making a deposit to both that person's health and yours. Both of you will feel better! This Valentine's day, I'm challenging you to think outside the box. Instead of waiting to see who will give you a gift start asking yourself, “who can I give something to?”; “whose day can I make better?”; “Who can use a meaningful touch today?” And give, give, give! You will both be glad you did!
